From the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu to the vibrant streets of Cusco, this journey through Peru will take you through fascinating archaeological sites, sacred valleys, and breathtaking mountain landscapes. Immerse yourself in the history of the Inca Empire, hike through picturesque landscapes, and experience the vibrant culture that makes Peru a truly unique destination.
A mystical land where ancient civilizations carved their history into the Andean mountains, and every stone tells a story of grandeur and mystery.
Day 1 Arrival in Cusco
Arrive in Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire, and take it easy to adjust to the high altitude (3,400 meters above sea level). Spend the day wandering the cobbled streets of Cusco’s Plaza de Armas and visit the incredible Coricancha Temple, once the most important temple of the Incas. Explore the San Blas neighborhood, known for its charming narrow streets and artisan shops. Have a hearty dinner with traditional dishes like cuy (guinea pig) or alpaca.
Day 2 Sacred Valley
Head out to the Sacred Valley, a region filled with archaeological treasures and picturesque villages. Start with a visit to the massive Inca ruins of Ollantaytambo, a fortified town that served as both a military outpost and a religious center. Next, visit the market town of Pisac, famous for its market and Inca ruins overlooking the valley. Enjoy the vibrant Andean culture and perhaps try some local snacks before returning to Cusco.
Day 3 Train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town)
Today, travel by train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway town to Machu Picchu. The scenic journey follows the winding Urubamba River, with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Once you arrive, you can either relax at your hotel or visit the local hot springs that the town is named after. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a walk around the town and enjoy the views of the lush rainforest that surrounds it.
Day 4 Machu Picchu
Wake up early and take the bus or hike up to the Machu Picchu archaeological site. Arrive just as the site opens to avoid the crowds and enjoy the tranquility of the “Lost City of the Incas.” Spend several hours exploring this wonder of the world, including the main plaza, the Intihuatana stone (the sun dial), the Temple of the Sun, and the ancient terraces. If you’re up for a challenge, hike up to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for panoramic views of the entire site and the surrounding mountains.
Day 5 More of Machu Picchu & Return to Cusco
If you’re interested, you can explore more of Machu Picchu, perhaps visiting the Inca Bridge or taking a guided tour to learn more about the site’s history and significance. Afterward, return to Aguas Calientes for lunch before taking the train back to Cusco. Enjoy the relaxing journey back to the city as you reflect on your experience at one of the most iconic places on Earth.
Day 6 Sacsayhuamán & Qorikancha
Once back in Cusco, spend the day visiting two more must-see Inca sites: Sacsayhuamán and Qorikancha. Sacsayhuamán is a massive ceremonial center with huge stones, some weighing up to 200 tons, and an impressive panoramic view of the city below. Next, head to Qorikancha, the Inca Sun Temple, where you can admire the finely constructed walls and learn about the spiritual practices of the Incas. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Peruvian dinner at one of Cusco’s many great restaurants.
Day 7 Rainbow Mountain or Moray & Maras
For your final day, you have a choice between two incredible excursions. If you’re up for an adventurous hike, take the trip to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), where you’ll trek through beautiful Andean landscapes to see the vibrant, multi-colored hills. Alternatively, visit the archaeological site of Moray, known for its concentric circular terraces, and the nearby salt mines of Maras, where locals still harvest salt in the traditional method.
In the evening, enjoy a relaxing dinner in Cusco, reflecting on your journey through the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.
